Dog Containment Systems

Does wireless or electronic dog containment work?

puppy dog

In the past if we wanted to contain our dog we didn't have a dog containment system we had a fence. But times have changed, the advances made in electronics have given us the wireless dog containment system. The manufacturers claim that now you can confine your dog to your yard, or keep it of the vegetable garden without the need for an unsightly fence.

If you have a good natured, well trained dog, then the new wireless dog containment system may be just what you are looking for. But before we go into the reasons why a wireless dog containment system may or may not be suitable for your particular circumstances I'll briefly describe what a wireless containment system is.

We all know some dogs love to roam and with ever increasing levels of traffic the danger to both pets and motorists is now greater than ever. Until fairly recently the only solutions were to either:

  • Erect a fence around your property to contain the dog,
    or
  • Attach the dog to a long fixed leash or chain that would allow some freedom but still keep the dog in your yard.

But now you can purchase a wireless dog containment system. Which means, you bury a transmitting wire in the ground around the perimeter of your property or yard. The transmitting wire is connected to the transmitter which is normally connected to your homes electricity supply.

Your dog wears a special collar that contains a radio receiver and some other electronic components. The receiver senses how close your dog is to the transmitting wire and if the dog gets too close the collar gives the dog a reminder not to cross the wire. The level of "reminder" that the dog receives if it wanders too far is adjustable from a gentle stimulus to what is best described as an electric shock.

The "reminder", under normal circumstances, is enough to keep most dogs inside the perimeter. But there are other considerations to bear in mind i.e.

  • This kind of dog containment requires dedicated training by the dog owner, so the dog understands what the electric reminder is all about.
  • A wireless dog containment system cannot protect the dog against other dogs entering the property and getting into a fight. Neither can it protect against children entering the property nor can it protect against dog thieves.

So do I think this type of electronic fence is a good idea? It depends on your particular dog and your particular circumstances. For example:

You have an old timer of a labrador that you want to keep out of the pool or ornamental pond because you're worried that he will either drown himself or make a mess of the place, then this type of dog containment is the perfect answer.

On the other hand,

If you own a pit bull with an attitude problem and the old lady next door has four cats and two poodles, would an electric shock make that much difference when the red mist comes down? I doubt it, you would be far better off buying a real fence and spend some time training your dog. As I've said under certain circumstances the wireless dog containment system is the perfect answer, but it not the only answer.
